On February 28, 2013 CADRE hosted a free webinar with Sukhsimranjit Singh, Associate Director, Willamette University Center for Dispute Resolution, Exploring the Cultural Dimensions of Conflict.
About the Webinar: Every society is riddled with conflict. Conflict is inevitable and different cultures have different ways of dealing with conflict within and outside the group. This session explored the cultural dimensions of conflict and provided an international perspective on exploring, negotiating with, and resolving a cross-cultural conflict. The presenter shared experiences, suggested tools, and provided a set of readings.
About the Presenter: Sukhsimranjit "Sukh" Singh practices, teaches and trains in dispute resolution. Prof. Singh serves as Associate Director for the nationally recognized Center for Dispute Resolution at Willamette University College of Law. Being fu
ll-time law faculty, he teaches Arbitration Law and Advocacy, Cross-Cultural Dispute Resolution, Negotiation, and Mediation Theory and Advocacy and as Contributing Associate Professor, he teaches Negotiation for Business at Atkinson Graduate School of Management.
Prof. Singh has mediated family, cross-cultural and inter-religious disputes and has spoken about cross-cultural conflict resolution in the United States, Europe and Asia. Recently, Prof. Singh settled a long-established church dispute in Oregon and consulted with the State of Oregon for cross-cultural trainings and special lectures. He has trained Judicial Officers in dispute resolution, consulted with the private and public sector and is an active mediator in the areas of commercial, family, and cross-cultural conflicts. He is co-chair of the American Bar Association's Section of Dispute Resolution-Committee on Associate Issues, board member of the Oregon Mediation Association, and is a qualified mediator in the states of Missouri, Minnesota and Oregon. Prof. Singh’s recent scholarship has appeared in the Cardozo Journal of Dispute Resolution and Hamline’s Rethinking Negotiation Teaching books.
Prof. Singh completed his post-graduate fellowship in dispute resolution at the Dispute Resolution Institute-Hamline University School of Law, where he taught dispute resolution courses in France and Spain and presently teaches Cross-Cultural Dispute Resolution. He obtained his LL.M. in Dispute Resolution with a full fellowship at the University of Missouri-Columbia (UMC), while serving as legal research associate with the UMC School of Medicine. Prof. Singh obtained his B.A. and LL.B. with a gold medal from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research, University of Law, Hyderabad, one of India's premier law schools. While in law school, Singh clerked with Chief Justice R.C. Lahoti and Justice G.S. Singhvi, both of the Supreme Court of India and assisted past president of Supreme Court Bar Association, Mr. P.P. Rao.
Prof. Singh finished his schooling in Punjab, a lively land known for its distinct culture and spiritual values. He is a student of Sikhism and practices its main principle of universal unity and understanding and enjoys learning about new cultures and fostering inter-faith dialogues in the U.S. and abroad. He lives with his family in Salem, Oregon.
