About the webinar: As students head back to school, either in person or online, there are often questions about parental rights under the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). With a global pandemic disrupting every part of our education system, there is additional confusion and concern about how COVID-19 is impacting students with disabilities. We identified pressing questions parents asked about how to navigate this new normal, and had them answered by an expert attorney in the field. Topics covered include: compensatory education, procedural safeguards, the waiver of rights, and keeping the “I” in IEP.
About the presenter: Diana Autin, Executive Co-Director, SPAN Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN), is an attorney who has used her legal knowledge to help train and support parents and parent leaders as advocates for their children and families as they navigate education, health, mental health, child welfare, and other systems. Diana brings the voices of parents, families, and communities to the table on state and national advisory committees on health and education. Diana serves on the board of the National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health. A graduate of the University of Michigan Law School, she was a Revson Fellow at Columbia University and a Wasserstein Public Interest Fellow at Harvard Law School. She is the adoptive mother of four adult children from diverse racial/cultural backgrounds, and a proud grandmother. A Cajun and Native American, Diana is deeply committed to equity, cultural reciprocity, and language access.
